A Beginner's Guide to Tibetan Singing Bowls

History

Tibetan singing bowls are ritual instruments that are believed to have originated from the Himalayas and date back to the times of Buddha Shakyamuni. Once these traditional bowls were brought to Tibet from India, so were the teachings of Buddha. However, the true history of Tibetan singing bowls remains a mystery due to the loss of knowledge following the Chinese military occupation of Tibet in the 1950s that resulted in the loss of many monks and nuns.

Uses

Tibetan singing bowls have been used throughout history for their relaxing and meditative qualities. While not much has been done regarding studies of the impacts of these instruments, some associated uses are reduced stress, blood pressure, depression and pain, improved sleep, and immune system stimulation. When played, the bowls emit vibrations that may affect the body and the mind, the sounds can reach brain waves to invoke a sense of relaxation, and/or the instruments may recreate similar psychological states as listening to music. Because of these theories, it is believed that Tibetan singing bowls are popular for mediation practices due to their close ties with ancient sound therapy.

Risks

Because there is limited knowledge on the impacts of Tibetan singing bowls, those prone to headaches and epilepsy are cautioned to avoid this sound therapy as the noises and vibrations could invoke adverse effects.

How to Play

Tibetan singing bowls have a crisp, bright tone when played correctly. To play the instrument, the mallet – that is usually made from Himalayan hardwood – should be pressed against the outside rim of the bowl. Once positioned correctly, the individual should use their full arm to move the mallet in a circular motion against the rim of the bowl quickly, slowing down once the clear tone is heard.
